The Challenge 👀

Mutual Pension Insurance Company Varma is one of the largest real estate investors in Finland, concentrating on commercial spaces. Their B2B real estate website functions as a “catalog” – its main purpose is to showcase the selection and act as a lead-generating funnel for sales, while also being an important tool for external sales agents.

The old real estate website had become outdated and was cumbersome to use. Its clunky UX didn’t cater anymore to the needs of users. In addition, the site was very slow and its information structure quite confusing. Mobile users were also struggling with the UI.

Solution 🛠️

I worked on the concept with a service designer. Since the website itself was a rather straightforward entity and e.g. technical aspects were for the most part out of our scope, we proposed creating the concept as an extended design sprint, roughly in 12 working days.

In order to stay focused and to communicate our approach to the client, we created a day-by-day schedule listing each work phase and its duration, which was fine-tuned during the process. We communicated with the client daily, sharing our progress and requesting input in key phases.

We naturally started with research – gaining understanding about current status by interviewing Varma’s experts and select external stakeholders. Through asking defined, well-planned questions we managed to gather an understanding of what were the current pain points in the service, and what were the client’s main goals. With this data we proceeded to sketch the service concept – user journey mapping, user flows, information architecture, data model, visual concept etc. I concentrated mostly on the user journey and the visual/UI side of things.

After establishing the basic structure and functionalities, I started creating and gathering visual assets (mainly from Varma Design System) and composing them into a clickable prototype. The prototype modeled the site’s main user flows on mobile platform, and I validated the design on both internal and external stakeholders. Based on the findings, I refined both the service concept and prototype and then delivered the final to the client. I also created a content guide – including a photography lookbook – for the content managers to use.

Results 🥳

The concept received very positive feedback and the client was satisfied with our rapid and agile way of working. User testing proved the efficiency of the new information structure and the usability of the UI. Varma Toimitilat site went into development phase and was released in the summer of 2022. The customer feedback has been very positive, and the new UX has been reflected in business KPIs.
